Welcome to our living room!
My sister gave me these curtains, which she had bought second-hand and used for a number of years when we purchased our home ten years ago. They have served us well, but are dry rotted, tearing every time I touch them. So When I found these valances (below)at a second-hand shop, I was very tempted to pick them up, despite the fact that they do NOT match the sofa and love seat.
This wall is an alcove outside of the living room, but the paint matches the valances exactly! You know what that means don't you?! I think I'm going to HAVE to repaint the living room.
I had to hang the valances to see what they looked like!
I do not like being able to see the neighbor's pine green house or the red of the Citgo gas station out the windows....Should I go with tan sheers? The stripes are sage green and burgundy.
I'm thinking of re-upholstering the sofa and love seat (there is a very tattered, torn spot in the center top of the sofa - I have it covered with an afghan my mom made for me at this point.) I'm sure I weakened the fabric by scrubbing it a couple of times a year with a scrub brush. But we paid a company to clean it once and it looked worse than when they originally came...the scrub brush worked wonders! A new couch would be lovely, but is not a possibility at this time. My sister, who is a fabulous interior decorator, suggested I go with chocolate brown fabric, since I need it to look nice and CLEAN.
So, you really have to use your imagination here, but can you imagine the walls painted tan (as in picture #2), with these valances, with possibly tan shears (maybe a thin chocolate panel on each side?) and chocolate brown furniture?
Those of you who know me well, know that I WANT to have all of this done by the time our company arrives on Friday. You also know that I won't be able to get it done. So what are your thoughts?
Should I go buy fabric that matches the furniture I have & make curtains and call it good or should I go all out and redo the whole living room?

Hmmm, I know how it is to have to make a decision. I wait sometimes for YEARS. But that's not what you want to hear, right? ha ha
I would not do anything with the curtains until you have the couch like you want. Have you looked on Craigslist? We recently got 2 leather loveseats for $450 from there. I don't know how much it would cost to reupholster but I've heard it can be quite a bit... but I would recommend a couch that is a solid color. Let your accessories and other things in the room get the attention with their patterns and not the couch.
After you get your couch like you want I would then look at the curtains again and decide what you want to do. I probably wouldn't choose a dark shear just because I like light to be able to stream into my room. But that's my personal preference.
Anyways, have fun sprucing things up. It's always enjoyable to change things up a bit. My husband doesn't get that. He could live with something for.e.v.e.r.

You are right, the couch should be the deciding factor in decorating the living room.
I did check Craig's List, but really don't have time to search right now. Sounds like a great buy for you, though!
Since the curtains were dry rotted beyond repair, I did search for something neutral that will go with what we have now and possibly still work in the future...found the perfect ones at JC Penneys "Sensational swag and valance set (semi-sheer)", but they no longer carry them.
I found some lace curtains that cover 3/4 of the window, that gather up in the center of each section for $5.00 a pair. Spent $20.00 altogether - so I'm using those for now. They let in lots of light, but afford a bit of privacy, too. I'll post pics later.
